F-Secure Internet Security 2012 is a capable and effective security suite which will protect you from a full range of threats, both online and off.
The first change you'll spot in this version is the new "Launch pad", a simple floating toolbar which provides easy access to your local security settings, online safety options, and the various services on offer at F-Secure's site.
Initially at least you'll probably click "Computer Security", which displays a familiar-looking console. In just a few clicks here you can view your current protection status, run an antivirus scan, check for updates, see reports on what the program has done - all the usual features.
The core antivirus engine is a good one, though, and regularly scores well with independent testing labs. AV Comparatives August 2011 comparative malware detection test, for instance, placed it 5th out of 16, with few false positives, and awarded it their highest Advanced+ rating. And of course there are plenty of other protective layers here.
F-Secure's DeepGuard technology monitors the behaviour of your programs, for instance, looking out for suspect activity.
A capable firewall can be customised to suit your needs.
A spam filter blocks unwanted junk; browsing protection sees the suite prevent you from accessing dangerous websites; and parental controls features mean you're able to restrict the content your children can access, and the amount of time they're able to spend online.
To maintain all this F-Secure Internet Security 2012 does run several background processes, at least nine in our tests. These only consume around 70MB of RAM between them, though, and in general this is a lightweight suite which won't weigh your PC down.
