Crisis Aversion Tool 1.1
Repair common Windows problems in a few clicks with this portable troubleshooting tool

Crisis Aversion Tool (CAT) is a portable, open source tool which makes it easy to fix a host of common Windows issues.

Is Windows Update no longer working, for instance? Click the Fixes button, check "Reset Windows Update" and click Apply, and the CAT will do its best to repair the problem.

Maybe Task Manager won't launch? This can happen if it's been disabled by malware. Give your system a thorough antivirus scan, if you haven't already, then use the "Reenable Task Manager" option to regain access to this useful tool.

And there are other options to reset your networking interfaces, restore many Explorer defaults, fix Internet Explorer, solve most printer installation errors, and more.

Programs like this do need to be treated with extreme caution (especially when they're still in beta). Recovering your default settings has its problems: you may get Windows working again, but there's also a chance that you could break some installed programs entirely, perhaps making your situation even worse than it was before.

As long as you only apply fixes when you're sure they're necessary, though, one at a time, and after making a complete system backup ("just in case"), then the CAT could save you a lot of time and hassle. And it's certainly deserving of a place in your portable troubleshooting toolkit.

Verdict:

The Crisis Aversion Tool undoubtedly provides an easy way to fix many tricky Windows problems. This is powerful medicine, though, and applying it incorrectly could create even worse issues, so use it with extreme caution (and, ideally, a full backup to hand).

Giveaway: WinISO Standard 6.1.0

Free Full Commercial Software

WinISO is a very comprehensive tool which provides everything you need to create, edit and convert disc images.

If you've an image file already, for instance (ISO, CUE/ BIN, NRG, MDF, CCD, IMG and DVD formats are supported) then you can open it in a click or two, browse the image contents, and extract the files you need with a quick drag and drop.

It's just as easy to create new ISO9660, UDF, even HFS+ images. Just choose the option you need, then either manually build up your preferred file and folder structure; drag and drop your files and folders from Explorer onto the program; or create an image directly from a CD, DVD or Blu-ray disc.

Of course you can edit images, too. Is an ISO file too large for your needs, say? Open it up, locate and remove any surplus files to free up a little space.

WinISO program has full support for reading and creating bootable image files. A simple conversion tool makes it easy to convert disc images into the format you need. And the program can even mount ISO files as Explorer files, or burn images to disc when you're ready to save them.

Please note, this trial version of WinISO Standard will not save files greater than 500MB in size.

Giveaway: on Wednesday, we're giving you the full current version of WinISO Standard 6 worth $29.95. The download link here will take you to Downloadcrew Giveaway.
