Waterfox 12
Waterfox is effectively Firefox's source code compiled for 64-bit versions of Windows.

64-bit is the future of computing – and one obvious benefit of running a 64-bit version of Windows is the fact it allows you to access more than 3.5GB of RAM, helping speed up your computer. Despite the growing popularity of 64-bit though, we're still in that transitional phase where many applications are still only available in 32-bit builds – they're compatible with 64-bit, but you get none of the performance benefits 64-bit computing can bring.

Firefox is one such example: the latest Nightly build is available in 64-bit, but we're at least six months away from it making the transition through Aurora and Beta to a final release.

For those who can’t wait for Firefox to embrace 64-bit, take a look at Waterfox instead. This is a dedicated 64-bit browser based on Firefox’s open source code, compiled specifically for 64-bit versions of Windows, complete with optimizations to help speed things up a little more.

This makes it instantly familiar to existing Firefox users – Waterfox is based on the current stable Firefox build, which means it functions in exactly the same way. Aside from its name on the menu at the top of the main window, there’s nothing to differentiate it from Firefox.

Note, because the app is 64-bit, you’ll need to have installed the 64-bit version of Microsoft's Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable to avoid an MSVCR100.DLL missing error message when you try to launch the app. You’ll also find handy links to 64-bit versions of Flash, Silverlight and Sun Java on the Waterfox download page too, while all add-ons that work in Firefox should work with Waterfox too.

It’s also important to note that Waterfox shares your Firefox settings, so should you come to uninstall it, don’t select the option to delete all personal information if you’re still using Firefox.

What's new in Waterfox 12.0:

-Windows: Firefox is now easier to update with one less prompt (User Account Control)
-Page Source now has line numbers
-Line breaks are now supported in the title attribute
-Improvements to "Find in Page" to center search result
-URLs pasted into the download manager window are now automatically downloaded
-Support for the text-align-last CSS property has been added
-Various security fixes
-Some TinyMCE-based editors failed to load (739141)
-OS X: WebGL performance may be degraded on some hardware (713305)

Verdict:

Waterfox is well worth running if you’re using a 64-bit version of Windows and want to push the performance envelope as far as you can.

About Time

Firefox should have done this long time ago. Its about time there was a x64 version. Needless to say it is better than Firefox with all the addons. Once FF makes the x64 version, then it will be equal. Till then, Waterfox is the way to go. Recommended highly.

Dont forget to have Flash and Java x64 too.

Hi Indy, there is a 64-bit version of Firefox "Nightly" or UX which you can try.

Spotlight: Free Full Software

Giveaway: WinISO Standard 6.1.0

Free Full Commercial Software

WinISO is a very comprehensive tool which provides everything you need to create, edit and convert disc images.

If you've an image file already, for instance (ISO, CUE/ BIN, NRG, MDF, CCD, IMG and DVD formats are supported) then you can open it in a click or two, browse the image contents, and extract the files you need with a quick drag and drop.

It's just as easy to create new ISO9660, UDF, even HFS+ images. Just choose the option you need, then either manually build up your preferred file and folder structure; drag and drop your files and folders from Explorer onto the program; or create an image directly from a CD, DVD or Blu-ray disc.

Of course you can edit images, too. Is an ISO file too large for your needs, say? Open it up, locate and remove any surplus files to free up a little space.

WinISO program has full support for reading and creating bootable image files. A simple conversion tool makes it easy to convert disc images into the format you need. And the program can even mount ISO files as Explorer files, or burn images to disc when you're ready to save them.

Please note, this trial version of WinISO Standard will not save files greater than 500MB in size.

Giveaway: on Wednesday, we're giving you the full current version of WinISO Standard 6 worth $29.95. The download link here will take you to Downloadcrew Giveaway.
