Auslogics BitReplica is a simple and free backup tool which makes it easy to protect your most important files from disaster.
The program presents a list of common backup sources, for instance, so if you'd like to include your Outlook profile, Documents folder, Firefox profile and so on then it's as easy as checking a box. (Although you can add other custom folders, too.)
BitReplica also offers a good selection of backup types: simple copy, two-way synchronization, and full, incremental or differential backup. A simple scheduler allows you to run the job manually, hourly, daily or weekly. And there are a few useful configuration options: you get some predefined "exclude" file filters; the program is able to back up alternate data streams; and you can have specific applications run before and after the backup job runs.
There are also a few down sides, though.
You're only able to choose particular folders to back up, for instance - it's not possible to select specific files within a folder.
Your backup destinations are limited to regular local or external drives: there's no optical disc, FTP or cloud support.
And there are no options to encrypt or password-protect your archive (not even as a part of the ZIP compression option).
Still, Auslogics BitReplica does provide a fair amount of functionality for a free tool, and if your needs are simple then it could make an excellent backup choice.
BitReplica 1.5 brings these changes (since the above review):
- added new profile type: Backup to SkyDrive
- added new profile type: Backup to Box.net
- improved Backup Wizard
- improved Created Backups menu
- improved program speed when creating different types of backups
- now the program creates fully zip-compatible archives
- added system tray notification of created backups
- fixed numerous bugsSupport cloud hosting added.
