As you browse the web you leave a trail of information about yourself and the web sites you visit. This is information that is all too easily shared with search engines and web sites, and in most instances you’ll not even be aware that it is happening. Disconnect is a free extension for Chrome that not only enables you to prevent such tracking from happening, but also makes it possible to keep track of which sites are tracking you.
If you don’t like the idea of sharing our browsing history or search details with third parties, this extension enables you to block this from happening. Web sites such as Google, Facebook and Digg are notorious for using information gleaned using cookies to personalize online services, and while this is sometimes useful, there are times when it is nothing more than an invasion of privacy; Disconnect enables you to completely de-personalize the web, so search are conducted without using cookies.
The blocking options are certainly useful, but for the curious web user the information the extension can throw up about which web sites are tracking information about you can be as interesting as it is useful. The extension lets you know in real time whenever tracking and cookie requests are blocked so you can keep track of which sites are the culprits and monitor just how effective Disconnect is being.
There are some web sites and online services that will not function correctly without the ability to use cookies. Thankfully, it is easy to disable Disconnect for individual sites and services, or you may want to simple disable the extension altogether on a temporary basis. Whichever route you decide to go down, this is an extension that places you in control of your own privacy so you know who is able to access your private information.
