Capture and analyse network packets from one simple application

York is a simple network capture tool which can log and analyse the traffic on your chosen network interface.

As with many similar tools, the program works by using WinPcap to log network traffic. Unusually, though, you don't have to find, download or configure this yourself: York will install it for you.

You do still have to set up the network adapter you'd like it to log, as this isn't decided automatically. But that only takes a moment (click Options > Network Adapter and choose the one you'd like to be monitored).

And once the program is configured, it can display your traffic details in all kinds of ways. The Packets view shows you the basic details of each connection: the local and destination addresses, ports and packet size. York can also capture the files you access and the pictures you view. And the program even detects HTTP, FTP, POP3, SMTP, SMB, VNC and AIM passwords, very useful if, say, you've forgotten an email account password and your email client offers no way to display it.

Version: 1.64 · New: Minor improvements

Verdict:

As network capture tools go, York is relatively easy to set up and configure, and it also provides plenty of ways to analyse and view your network traffic

WhatsApp Messenger 2.19.11

Free Full Commercial Software

WhatsApp Messenger is the world's most popular instant messaging app for smartphones.

You can use it to send and receive text and voice messages, photos, videos, even call your friends in other countries, and because it uses your phone's internet connection it might not cost you anything at all (depending on whether you'll pay data charges).

It's easy to set up and use. There's no need to create and remember new account names or pins because it works with your phone number, and uses your regular address book to find and connect you with friends who use WhatsApp already.

You can talk one-to-one or in group chats, and because you're always logged in there's no way to miss messages. Even if your phone is turned off, WhatsApp will save your messages and display them as soon as you're back online.

There's plenty more (location sharing, contact exchange, message broadcasting) and the app is free for a year, currently $0.99/ year afterwards.

What's New in Version 2.19.11

• You can now reply to a group message privately in your 1:1 chat. Tap and hold a message in a group chat and select "More", then "Reply Privately".
• When editing a photo or video, you can tap the smiley icon to add stickers.
• From the Status tab, you can now 3D touch to preview a contact's status.
