BPing
A network "ping" tool with added audio

BPing is a tiny console-based ping tool with an unusual extra: sound. Sounds odd, but double-click the program and you'll understand immediately.

By default the program immediately pings Google.com and plays a sound (from Space Invaders!) every time a reply arrives. Now you don't need to watch the window to understand what's going on: if replies slow down drastically, or your internet connection goes down, the sounds will also slow or stop and you'll immediately hear that something has changed.

You don't have to live with the defaults. Add a -d switch and BPing only plays a sound when there's no reply. Effectively this means you can leave the program running in a window and it'll alert you when your internet connection goes down, or the monitored resource is unavailable.

There are other switches to specify a custom host name or IP address, to scan your whole network, set the number of pings to use, specify a timeout, use a custom audio file, set audio volume, and more.

Enter BPing /h at the command line to see the full switch list.

Verdict:

Adding audio to Ping is a surprisingly smart idea, and turns BPing into a genuinely helpful troubleshooter/ monitor which anyone can use.

WhatsApp Messenger 2.17.51

Free Full Commercial Software

WhatsApp Messenger is the world's most popular instant messaging app for smartphones.

You can use it to send and receive text and voice messages, photos, videos, even call your friends in other countries, and because it uses your phone's internet connection it might not cost you anything at all (depending on whether you'll pay data charges).

It's easy to set up and use. There's no need to create and remember new account names or pins because it works with your phone number, and uses your regular address book to find and connect you with friends who use WhatsApp already.

You can talk one-to-one or in group chats, and because you're always logged in there's no way to miss messages. Even if your phone is turned off, WhatsApp will save your messages and display them as soon as you're back online.

There's plenty more (location sharing, contact exchange, message broadcasting) and the app is free for a year, currently $0.99/ year afterwards.

What's New in Version 2.17.51

• When typing text in a chat, you can tap and hold to select the text and easily bold, strikethroughor italacize it.
